Merry Christmas, girls! Hope everyone is enjoying a relaxing holiday weekend. How did you enjoy your holiday celebration? This year I: 1) got the beau his new favorite toy of the season ahead: Beats by Dre, 2) surprised the bro-tagrapher with a baby kitten (see my instagram, now!), 3) made my mum (and copy-editor!) extra handbag happy, and 4) got pops a cocktail kit fit and full with sips essentials. And after putting those final touches on an extra, extra wonderful Christmas celebration, I can’t help but reflect on the last few days of 2014. This year was an extra magical one for me. And even this day (a year ago) was especially special; let’s elaborate on why…
The day after Christmas of 2013, I decided to create my own kind of business plan and I set goals for myself. What I did not know at the time was that these goals were not resolutions. They were destinations. Today I pulled out my [old college] laptop to find my little business plan. May I remind you—I set these goals for myself, as I knew I was taking on 15 hours at the University of Texas (hello, Biology 2), my extensive work schedule at Kendra Scott, the possibility of an internship (enter: my new position at Camille Styles), a rather big graduation, and that little thing I liked to call my own business: The Darling Detail.
As I stare at this little business plan, a year later, I can’t help but smile. It’s not that I have accomplished every goal I set for myself, but I realized how hard I worked to end up in a new and better destination. New Year’s celebrations and resolutions aren’t about perfectionism; we can’t beat ourselves up for not achieving every single little expectation we set, but we can applaud ourselves for getting farther than we’ve ever come before. I’m a firm believer that positive things happen to positive people and that essentially, happiness is not a quality you’re born with. It’s a state of mind. No matter what roadblocks (or what may seem like roadblocks) you may have ahead, it’s okay to dream big and remember that all it takes is the person inside of you—the person who will work for it.
So, with 2015 right around the corner, let’s walk into the new year equipped and ready to take ourselves to the next destination(s) ahead. With a positive outlook, we’ll only reach farther than we ever dreamed and past any barriers that we may run into within the goals and resolutions we set for ourselves. This year, we will give ourselves a reason to smile bigger than we did the year before. Merry Christmas! xoxo-Jessi
